I find that I get a lot done during the week but at
the end, like around Friday, I look back on the week
and feel like I haven't accomplished anything.
Mostly, I notice how tired I am and what I didn't get done.
How can I get more satisfaction out of my life?
The Coach's View
In our careers, many of us are driven by the "need to succeed."
You could say we are "driven" to look good to others and to
appear to be accomplishing a great deal.
What we fail to see is who we are being as we busily go about
our work.
The things we are doing are the actions that we take. Yet, who
we are being is a state of mind. That state of mind is what
contributes to the level of satisfaction we experience as we go
through our week.
Noticing what you are committed to can help you determine where
the satisfaction comes from for you.
Are you doing work that gives you joy?
Do you contribute to the well being or empowerment of others or
are you just performing one task after another?
A common saying we coaches use is that...
"We are human beings, not human doings."
What gives a human being satisfaction is doing work that is
fulfilling, that contributes in some way to someone we care about.
It is up to us to determine for ourselves what kind of work that
is to be.
I invite you to examine what makes your heart sing.
What are the things in your day that are joyful - and satisfying?
Then look and see how you can do more of those. If you are
not clear what you love or what makes your heart sing, that
is even more reason to begin to discover that and take steps
to move toward it.
Satisfaction in life is truly about who you are being and if
you are fulfilling your purpose - whatever YOU say that purpose
is. That is the best part of it all.
When you begin to discover that, you will begin to notice that
your life no longer feels hard or unsatisfying; when you are
fulfilling your purpose, at the end of the week, you will be
satisfied, regardless of what you are doing or what tasks you
have or have not accomplished.
